Conversate is a free website that provides an instant discussion space for you and your friends and family.

Getting Started
First, make an account: on the Conversate homepage, fill in your e-mail address. Your e-mail address will be your Conversate login. Then choose a password. You can create multiple Conversate accounts for different e-mail addresses (and later on you can choose to combine accounts).

After logging in, click on "start a new conversation," and fill in whatever you want to talk about. If you want to talk about an article or a website, copy and paste the web address into the URL space and your group will be able to see the link in the conversation. If you paste a link to a song or a video, it will play when people come to the page. If you want to talk about an image online, fill in the web address and the image itself will appear in your conversation. But your conversation doesn't need to have a website attached -- you can create a conversation about anything.

Once you've invited your group and clicked "Start the Conversation," an e-mail will go out to your group inviting them to join the conversation. Your group will click on a link and they'll have the chance to create a profile on Conversate. Users can create as many profiles on Conversate as they wish, using different e-mail addresses. (We recommend creating an account on Conversate to have the easiest conversations, but users can skip this step if they prefer and join the conversation without a profile.) After they login, your group can post messages to the conversation.

Invite More Friends

At any point in the conversation, you can invite more people to join. Anyone who joins will be able to see the entirety of the conversation up to that point.

Types of Conversations
You can use Conversate to discuss, well, anything. The goal of Conversate is to serve as an easy-to-use discussion space for friends and family, without the hassle of sending a lot of e-mails, or worrying about who's missing from any given e-mail list. With Conversate, you always know who's in on the conversation. Here are a few suggestions:

  • discuss news articles or blog posts

  • make social plans with friends or family

  • have an ongoing discussion among an organization, business, or fan club... Conversate can be a chat room that doesn't require your constant attention.

  • discuss movies and music, share your opinions and new discoveries

  • collaborate on educational or research projects

Creating Lists
You can create a list that will automatically invite a pre-set list of your friends with a single click. On the "My People and Lists" page, simply enter in the e-mail addresses of your contacts and check them off to create new lists. You can create as many overlapping lists as you like.

Using Bookmarks
Starting conversations gets even easier when you use the Conversate bookmark. On every page, there is a bookmark for "Conversate!" Place this bookmark in the toolbar folder of your web browser, by dragging it or bookmarking the link. Then, when you find an interesting website that you want to talk about, simply click the Conversate bookmark that link and summary of the website will open up in a new conversation. Then you choose the people you want to invite to the conversation and click start, and you're off -- that's just three clicks to better conversations online. You can also set up the bookmark to automatically invite any of your lists whenever you click on it.

RSS Feeds
Conversate presents a number of options for keeping track of your conversations. Users can set their preferences on their profile page, so that they can choose to be alerted to every new message via a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed. The RSS feed offers a hassle-free way of keeping up with a conversation -- it's the essence of Conversate. Or, users can choose to be alerted to every new message over e-mail.

Starting a Conversation Via Email
With Conversate, you can start a conversation by sending an email to go@conversate.org. You can also email (listname)@lists.conversate.org to automatically invite your list to the conversation about that topic, with that content.

Spam Filters
Unfortunately, sometimes invitations to Conversate will be blocked by the spam filters of e-mail programs. Often, the user can change this simply by adding Conversate.org to a list of trusted websites in their e-mail program, or by adding your e-mail to a list of trusted contacts. Another way of addressing this problem, of course, is to simply e-mail your group yourself and provide the link to the page on Conversate. Let us know of any difficulties you encounter by using our feedback form.
